FIREPLACE LOCATIONWith today's direct vent or even vent-free fireplaces the possibilities of where to add a fireplace are limitless whether you're designing a new home or remodeling an older one.
DESIGN FOR BEAUTYToday's gas log sets and electric and gas fireplaces and stoves offer incredibly realistic flames and if that's all you want, you can stop there. But if you also want to heat a room or area of your home, there are many excellent options for you. Consider fireplaces that run on natural gas, propane, wood pellets, or oil. We also have models that run on electricity that can serve as an alternative fuel source. Having an alternative heat source in your home is a smart precaution against winter power outages.
WHAT ABOUT EFFICIENCY?While it’s true that the traditional, romantic wood burning fireplace in a big, open room sucks indoor air for combustion and loses most of its heat up the chimney, today's sealed units, even the woodburning ones, have the mechanics, controls, and venting systems to use outdoor air for combustion, reduce thermal loss, and effectively supplement the home’s primary heating system. A fireplace used for “zoned” or small-area space heating can lessen the energy demand on the furnace and reduce utility bills by allowing you to turn down your thermostat when the fire is going. For more information about fireplaces in general, see House Logic.
FIREPLACE COSTSIf you've got a fireplace already but it isn't working or is very inefficient, consider an insert when upgrading. An electric one can cost as little as a few hundred dollars.
